Touchless Smart Faucet

How it works

A touchless smart faucet replaces the mechanical handle with motion sensing, allowing water to flow when hands or dishes enter the detection zone. A small infrared emitter shines a beam outward, and a receiver watches for reflected light. When you move your hand beneath the spout, the sensor interprets the change in reflected signal and tells the valve module to open, letting water run automatically. Once your hand leaves the zone, the sensor tells the valve to close, conserving water and keeping the handle dry.

The smart module manages the solenoid valve, which is usually a proportional valve that smoothly opens and closes to avoid water hammer. The valve sits between the water supply and the faucet body, and a small brushless DC motor or electromagnet moves a plunger that either allows water through or seals it off. Because the valve needs power, most touchless faucets include an AC adapter or batteries housed in the base.

Many models also include Bluetooth or Wi-Fi for app control, letting you pre-program temperature presets or set hygiene cycles that flush the pipes automatically. Some advanced versions integrate with smart home systems so you can tell your voice assistant to fill a cup or rinse ingredients without touching the handles at all.

App-based controls let you set the desired temperature and flow for different tasks—filling a pot may request high flow at lower temperature, while handwashing triggers warm water with the preset flow rate.

The faucets also include hygiene-friendly flush features. After prolonged inactivity, they run a quick flush to rinse stagnant water from the spout. They can also detect too much motion or continuous presence and reduce the flow automatically to avoid wasting water or blocking the user.

Safety features include a child lock that disables the sensor or predetermined maximum temperature so toddlers do not receive scalding water. Overhead sensors have adjustable ranges so your pantry can tailor detection to avoid false triggers from reflections, dogs, or moving objects.

Keep the sensor window clean so the infrared beam stays clear. Replace batteries when the app warns you, and check the solenoid valve for debris if flow becomes erratic. During prolonged inactivity, run a manual flush to prevent stagnation, and if the faucet includes wireless updates, install firmware patches to keep the security strong.
