Moisture sensors prevent the pile from going soggy, either by telling you to loosen it up or by activating a small fan that helps dry the interior faster.

Once the compost reaches the desired maturity—often between 140 and 160 degrees Fahrenheit for a hot compost—the system alerts you so you can harvest the dark, crumbly soil.

If the app warns of heat loss, give it a spin and add new material to keep the microbes active.

Clean the exterior and the vents occasionally so airflow stays unimpeded. Inspect the seals and latches so the drum stays closed during rotation, and keep the frame level to prevent it from tippy while you turn it. Replace batteries or charge the integrated pack if the system uses wireless sensors, and update firmware when the manufacturer adds smarter composting algorithms.

Harvest the finished compost after the color turns dark and the smell becomes earthy. Empty the drum by opening it and scooping the finished material out, then rinse the interior with a garden hose. Let it dry before adding a new batch to avoid diluting the next pile with residual moisture.
