How does an Electric Blanket work?

How it works

An electric blanket routes low-voltage heat through conductive threads stitched into the fabric. When you plug it in and select a setting, alternating current flows through the wires, raising their temperature. The wires form a grid that spreads warmth evenly across the entire surface, so when you drape it over your bed it keeps your body warm while the exterior remains comfortable to the touch.

The controller cycles the current on and off via a thermostat so the blanket stays between 90–110°F, switching to lower energy output as the temperature stabilizes. Many blankets also include timers and dual zones, letting each sleeper pick their comfort level.

Low-voltage power keeps the wires safe, and the stitched wiring is flexible so the blanket can fold and drape without damage. Safety circuits detect faults and cut power if the sensors sense overheating or a short.

Key components

Operation & care

Place the blanket over your mattress or use it as a top layer. Turn it on, pick a temperature, and the wires begin to heat in seconds. Turn it off when not needed to save energy; the control automatically cuts power if the blanket is folded or if it overheats.

When cleaning, unplug the controller, gently hand wash or machine wash on gentle, and air dry thoroughly before reattaching the controller. Replace the controller if the wires show wear or if the blanket fails to heat evenly.

Most blankets advise keeping them flat while in use so the heating wires maintain consistent contact with your body for uniform warmth.

Why it matters

Electric blankets provide low-power surface heat through wires woven into fabric layers. Their heating elements, thermostats, and safety circuits make them a practical way to warm a bed or blanket without heating the whole room as much.
