Motorized Standing Desk

How it works

A motorized standing desk lets you raise or lower your workspace smoothly at the touch of a button. Beneath the desktop are electric linear actuators—telescoping columns driven by brushless or brushed DC motors—and a control box that coordinates their movement. When you press the up or down button, the controller feeds voltage to the motors, causing threaded steel rods or belts to extend or retract the legs. Because the legs are synchronized via the control unit, they move together, keeping the top level.

Sensors inside the feet monitor torque or current draw so the desk stops if it hits an obstacle. Most desks include presets so you can save preferred sitting and standing heights; the control board stores those values and stops the motors at those limits.

The drive system often uses planetary gears to convert high motor rpm into slow, strong linear movement. The legs lock in place when power is removed, so the desk stays put even if the power is cut.

Motorized desks travel at a controlled speed—usually around 1 to 2 inches per second—so you can inch toward the right height without overshooting. The controller includes acceleration profiles so the desk starts and stops gradually, reducing vibration. Some models measure push-back force, letting you “walk away” and the desk will keep rising until you lift gently or reach a height limit.

Preset features let the desk remember your seated and standing heights. You keep pressing the preset button until the desk reaches the saved position, eliminating guesswork and ensuring proper ergonomic alignment for your monitor, keyboard, and elbows.

Many desks also incorporate memory functions for multiple users, locking them to specific profiles via the keypad or a smartphone app. When you press your profile, the controller adjusts automatically to the set height.

Maintenance & why it matters

Lubricate the internal screws occasionally and keep the columns free of dust to avoid binding. If the desk loses power, you can usually recalibrate by lowering it fully and re-running the initialization routine so the controller relearns the endpoints.
