How they work

Headphones transform electrical signals into the vibrations you hear through small drivers. Each driver contains a diaphragm attached to a voice coil placed inside a magnetic field. When hundreds of tiny alternating currents race through the coil, the magnetic field pushes and pulls, making the diaphragm wobble. Those pressure waves reach your ears as bass, mids, and shimmering highs.

The casing around the driver controls how the air moves. Closed-back headphones seal the rear of the driver, creating a tighter bass response, while open-back designs let air flow through for a more natural soundstage. A foam or silicone pad rests against your ears so that the sound is directed toward the canal with minimal leakage.

Sound tuning

Audio designers tune the driver and housing to emphasize certain frequencies. Bass can be reinforced with a bass-reflex port or larger diaphragm, whereas treble clarity depends on the stiffness of the diaphragm and damping materials inside the shell. Active noise canceling adds a microphone that listens to ambient noise, inverts it, and plays it through the ears so the external hum disappears.

Wireless headphones now include onboard digital-to-analog converters and amplification chips in addition to Bluetooth radios. The signal is compressed when transmitted and then decoded before reaching the coil. Firmware updates refine codecs and latency so that video and music stay synchronized.

Fit & care

A precise fit keeps the soundstage stable and the headphones from looking for comfort with your shoulders. Many models allow headbands to extend and swiveling earcups to contour. Memory foam cushions conform to ears while maintaining enough pressure for a seal.

Cleaning requires wiping the cushions and keeping the mesh free of dust. Replaceable pads extend longevity, and removing cables before storing prevents broken terminations. Wireless sets require charging, but with modern lithium-ion cells they last for a full workday or more.
