An electric bug zapper uses ultraviolet light to attract flying insects, then kills them with a high-voltage grid. The ultraviolet LEDs or fluorescent tube emit wavelengths that insects find irresistible, so they fly toward the glow. Hang or place the zapper away from where people sit, usually a few feet above ground and near doors or patios where insects enter. Plug the unit in at dusk, and leave it running through the night so insects keep coming to the light. Avoid placing it directly above the dinner table, as the UV light can make food look odd and the noise might be annoying.
Unplug the zapper before emptying the tray or brushing the grid. Wipe the tray clean and vacuum the grid gently with a brush to clear debris that might lower the voltage. Replace bulbs annually or when they dim, since faded light attracts fewer insects.
If you notice electrical arcing outside of insect activity, unplug the unit and inspect the grid for stuck debris or corrosion. Many models include a safety switch that cuts power when the housing opens; test it occasionally to keep the device reliable.
