How it works

A coffee grinder breaks beans into uniform particles by forcing them between two surfaces. Blade grinders use a spinning blade to chop beans in a single chamber, while burr grinders squeeze beans between two abrasive discs that rotate at a fixed distance. Burr grinders excel because the gap between the discs stays constant, creating evenly sized grounds that extract predictably when brewed.

Inside an electric burr grinder, the beans drop through a chute and meet the rotating burr. As the bean passes through, it is crushed and expelled into a catch bin. Older manual grinders use a hand crank to spin the burr, giving the user direct feedback on grind resistance. The consistent grind size ensures each particle releases flavor at a predictable rate during brewing.

Some grinders include timers or weight sensors so you can dose a precise amount of coffee without guesswork. The motor typically throttles itself to avoid burning the beans through too much friction heat.

The grounds outlet usually swivels or has a spout that fits directly above your portafilter or brewing vessel, minimizing mess. Some commercial-style grinders incorporate doser chambers that release measured scoops on demand.

Maintenance

Coffee oils and fragments can gum up the burrs. Pull the hopper and remove any beans before wiping the surfaces with a brush. Ceramic brushes or compressed air knock loose trapped grounds without damaging the burr teeth.

Every few months, remove the burrs for a deeper clean. Some grinders come with special wrenches to lift out the top burr. A quick rinse and dry before reassembly keeps the machine fresh, but never soak the motor housing or wiring.

Recalibrate the grind setting if you take the burrs out; the alignment pins ensure the gap stays accurate, but repeated disassembly can introduce slight variations. Keep the hopper lid on to prevent dust from entering when the grinder is idle.
